Are you currently using a smartphone that relies on the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system? If so, you’re going to want to either upgrade your device as quickly as you can or, if possible, update your phone to Windows 10 Mobile, because Microsoft just made a big announcement with regards to its older OS.
- As of July 11, Microsoft is no longer offering support for Windows Phone 8.1 users.
And while this might not seem like a huge deal when you consider the OS was released three years ago, about three out of every four people who use a Windows-based smartphone are still relying on Windows Phone 8.1 rather than Windows 10 Mobile.
That means that there are many people out there right now who won’t be able to get support or critical security patches for their smartphones due to this change.
Microsoft has also decided to pull the plug on a number of other products as well. But the difference between those products and the Windows Phone 8.1 OS is that many of them were released more than a decade ago and are no longer in use by consumers. This sudden abandonment of Windows Phone 8.1 support could be problematic for Microsoft in the future. Many 8.1 users will likely migrate to iPhones or Android devices, while others will express their outrage over the situation to Microsoft directly.
